January has been designated “Slow Cooking Month”, typically a time to share tried & true slow-cooker recipes (and believe us, we are big fans of this handy appliance). Here at Shiloh Farms, it is also an ideal opportunity to highlight the idea of “Slow Food” – dishes made from scratch using whole food ingredients and traditional techniques.


Many of us have treasured memories centered around the kitchen: stories shared around the kitchen counter, cherished recipes passed through the generations, and aromas and flavors that transport us to a specific place and time. However, in this age of on-the-go living, many of these traditions are being lost in favor of fast food, grab and go, and heat and serve.


There is certainly a place for these convenient options (no one has the time to make a meal from scratch every night!), but during these slow days of winter, why not take a lazy Saturday or quiet Sunday and try your hand at making Traditional Red Beans & Rice, cooked low and slow on the stovetop; forego the instant oatmeal in favor of a hearty, whole grain breakfast; or ditch the packaged mix and bake a cake from scratch instead? You may just find that the time spent, and memories made, will make the finished product taste even better!

Shiloh Farms Organic & Non-GMO Nuts

We all know that nuts taste great & are an excellent source of protein, fiber, & heart-healthy fatty acids. But have you ever considered just how versatile they are? Try some of our sweet & savory ideas:


• Toast nuts in a dry pan to enhance their natural flavor. Chop & sprinkle over smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or even ice cream!

• Add crunch & texture to salads, roasted vegetables, pasta dishes, or whole grain pilafs.

• Make your own customized nut butter. Pulse in a food processor until a thick paste forms, then sweeten with honey & season with salt to taste. Have fun with the flavorings – try adding cocoa, cinnamon, or other spices!

• Combine your favorite nuts, seeds, & dried fruits (& maybe even some of our Organic Dark Chocolate Chips!) for a quick & easy trail mix.

Grind nuts into a flour to be added to breads, muffins, & other baked goods.

• Puree nuts with fresh herbs, parmesan, & olive oil for a simple pesto to serve with pasta, top steamed vegetables, or spread on sandwiches. Go classic with pine nuts or experiment with walnuts, almonds, or even hazelnuts!

• Coarsely chop nuts & add to breadings for fish, chicken, or vegetables.

• Try homemade nut-milk: Soak nuts overnight, then puree with filtered water until smooth. Add a little salt & sweetener of choice to taste. Strain & enjoy!
