On-the-Go Summer Eats

Shiloh Farms Signature Trail Mix: Organic Chocolate Chips, Cranberries, Turkish Apricots, Pumpkin Seeds, & Toasted Cashews

Whether packing for a day at the beach, a hike in the woods, or just a picnic at your local park, summer is a season for easy, portable, grab & go fare. But don’t fall into the trap of reaching for greasy bag of potato chips or fast-food hamburger. Try some of our favorite ideas for ensuring that your on-the-go dining is wholesome & healthy, too!

Pita pockets are our go-to when it comes to portable meals & the possibilities are endless! Heading out for an early-morning trek? Slather on some nut butter & fill with fresh fruit. Sprinkle on some shredded coconut & sunflower seeds for a nutritious & filling on-the-go breakfast, ready in 5 minutes!

Mason jars make a perfect container for grab & go salads. Make a big batch of lentils, garbanzo beans, or your favorite whole grain, then portion out into individual jar salads for the whole week! Follow this basic formula: dressing on bottom, then grains or beans followed by chopped veggies, then top with lettuce, cheese, nuts, & seeds. When ready to eat, just shake it all up & enjoy!

Put that mason jar to a sweeter use with a deliciously simple chia pudding. Just mix together chia seeds & milk (or your preferred non-dairy milk) in a 1:4 ratio, add sweetener to taste, & refrigerate overnight. The next morning, top with fresh fruit & you’re ready to go!

There’s a reason why trail mix is a summer snacking staple: it’s a tasty treat that is also quick, convenient, & super-portable. Try one of our suggested combinations or use your own preferred mix of nutsfruit, & seeds – just don’t forget the chocolate chips!

When you want a crunchy, salty snack, our Mini Pretzels are the perfect alternative to potato chips. Trying to avoid salt? Not to worry – we have salt-free options, too!

Go Nuts for Nuts!

Shiloh Farms Organic & Non-GMO Nuts

We all know that nuts taste great & are an excellent source of protein, fiber, & heart-healthy fatty acids. But have you ever considered just how versatile they are? Try some of our sweet & savory ideas:

• Toast nuts in a dry pan to enhance their natural flavor. Chop & sprinkle over smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, or even ice cream!

• Add crunch & texture to salads, roasted vegetables, pasta dishes, or whole grain pilafs.

• Make your own customized nut butter. Pulse in a food processor until a thick paste forms, then sweeten with honey & season with salt to taste. Have fun with the flavorings – try adding cocoa, cinnamon, or other spices!

• Combine your favorite nuts, seeds, & dried fruits (& maybe even some of our Organic Dark Chocolate Chips!) for a quick & easy trail mix.

Grind nuts into a flour to be added to breads, muffins, & other baked goods.

• Puree nuts with fresh herbs, parmesan, & olive oil for a simple pesto to serve with pasta, top steamed vegetables, or spread on sandwiches. Go classic with pine nuts or experiment with walnuts, almonds, or even hazelnuts!

• Coarsely chop nuts & add to breadings for fish, chicken, or vegetables.

• Try homemade nut-milk: Soak nuts overnight, then puree with filtered water until smooth. Add a little salt & sweetener of choice to taste. Strain & enjoy!

Sprouting: Bringing the Wonders of New Life to your Kitchen!

Though it may not yet feel like it wherever you are, today is officially the First Day of Spring! Before long you’ll start noticing trees budding & early flowers poking their colorful heads above the ground – the earth coming alive again. But things aren’t just “springing” up outside your window. Sprouting brings the myriad wonders of new life right to your kitchen table all year long!

At Shiloh Farms & PureLiving, sprouting is an essential part of our heritage & we are always on the lookout for new ways to highlight sprouted grains, legumes, & seeds in our products. But you may still wonder what exactly sprouting is & why it is so important. Well, consider this your primer on all things sprouted:

What is Sprouting?

Sprouting is a natural process for preserving the many wonders of new life. Dried grains (& legumes, nuts, etc.) are essentially seeds, & as such they contain all of the nutrients necessary for creating & supporting new, living plants. However, many of these nutrients are “locked away,” remaining dormant until they are needed. Sprouting is simply the process of allowing these grains to begin germination, transforming them from hibernating seeds to living plants.

Why is Sprouting Important?

As whole grains (or legumes, seeds, etc.) begin to sprout, naturally occurring beneficial enzymes are activated, while vitamins, & minerals that normally lay dormant are released. At the same time, starches & proteins are converted into more easily digested simple sugars. These processes result in the increased bioavailability of nutrients, making them more easily absorbed by the body to provide you energy & nourishment.

How can I try it?

Shiloh Farms signature Sprouted Breads (15% off through March!) are each made from a blend of organic, sprouted whole grains.
